The Grand Tour of Western Serbia

(Tara, Mokra Gora, Zlatibor)

Tara is located in the western part of Serbia and belongs to the inner zone of the Dinaric Alps and covers an area of 183 km2. The length of Tara is 50 km and it is 22 km wide. Tara was declared a national park on July 13th, 1981. It covers an area of 19.200 hectares. Due to its favorable climate and remoteness, Tara is home to a rare relict and endemic tree species of the Balkan Peninsula, the Pančić Spruce, and many other natural monuments that can be called living fossils. The average height of Mount Tara is 1000-1200 meters above sea level. Its highest point is Kozji Rid (1591 m) and the lowest (291 m) is at Lake Perućac. The River Vrelo is the strongest karstic spring in the national park, and it flows into the Drina River after flowing 365 meters. Tara has a mountain climate with cool summers and cold winters with a lot of snow. It often rains in May. July and August are the driest months, and autumn is sunny and warmer than spring.

Mokra Gora is a mountain Zlatibor dispersed village. Important road routes have passed through Mokra Gora since the old days. Today, it is a popular tourist destination famous for the Šargan Eight. Šargan Eight is the most attractive tourist and museum narrow gauge railway in Europe. Away from the bustle of modern life, enriched with natural beauty of the Mokra Gora region, this unique European railway revives the nostalgic and romantic spirit of days past with each steam locomotive wistle. There is also Mecavnik, the wooden-town of the famous film director, Emir Kusturica, built on the lookout above Mokra Gora.

Zlatibor – famous for its meadowsand pastures, beneficial climate, as well as for numerous activities that satisfies even the choosy ones. It is well known as the “factory of red blood cells”. It is at 1.000 meters above sea level and is characterized by a moderate climate.


Day One – Perućac

Day Two – Mount Tara

• trekking : Jarevac – the outlook Crnjeskovo – Ladjevac – Monastery Rača (10 km)
• boat ride through the Perucac Lake Gorge (2-3 hours)
• lunch on board
• dinner – at the hotel
The first part of the day involves a very interesting trekking tour where you can visit areas of exceptional beauty within relatively short distances: Lake Jarevac, the stables Dora, the church Manastirski Stanovi, the lookout Crnjeskovo with a view of Rača Gorge, the spring Ladjevac and nearby waterfalls (with constant water temperature of 18 °C throughout the year), an attractive hiking trail with numerous bridges and water mills, archealogical locality “St George’s Skit”, natural rarity Bukva Kapija (Beech Gate), and the medieval monastery Raca.
Transfer to Lake Perućac and the boat ride through the picturesque Lake Perućac Gorge. Lunch on board with live music.

Day Three – Mokra Gora

• lunch at the Mokra Gora restaurant
• visit to Mećavnik, the wooden-town on the slopes of Mokra Gora
• visit to the healing water spring Bele Vode (White Water)

Visit to the famous Mokra Gora and enjoying its sights. Driving the most attractive narrow gauge railway in Europe, “Šargan Eight”. With its numerous bridges, tunnels, lookouts and the amazing steam locomotive Ćira, this drive will be memorable for all the visitors without any doubt. Lunch will be held at the restaurant at the last train stop.
After the drive on the famous Eight we will visit well known Mećavnik, the wooden-town of the famous film director, Emir Kusturica, built on the lookout above Mokra Gora.
Bele Vode water spring is famous for the healing features of the water. Visit to the church located near the spring.

Day Four – Mount Tara

• trekking : the Nature Reserve Crveni potok (Red Stream) – Carpet Meadow (3 km)
Mitrovac – the lookout Banjska Stena (Banjska Rock) (4 km)
• boat ride on the mountain lake Zaovine (about 2 hours) and visit to the lookout Kik
• outdoor lunch (specialties of Serbian national cuisine)
• trekking : Karaklije – the lookout Janjac ( 6 km)
• dinner – at the hotel
A rather diverse tour where you can visit three attractive lookouts, have a boat ride on a mountain lake and learn a lot about local history.
The Nature Reserve Crveni Potok (Red Stream) is the unique habitat of the endemic tree species, Pančić Spruce, in peat soil in Europe. The moors where the spruce habitat is found influnced the formation of peat soil. That is why visitors to the reserve and to the Carpet Meadow feel as though they are levitating while walking.The lookout Banjska Rock is the most magnificent place on Mount Tara. You can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the Lake Perućac Gorge and hydroelectric power plant Bajina Bašta from the lookout.
Lake Zaovine is a crystal clear mountain lake on the Rzav River. Numerous bays, blue-green color of the water and dense coniferous forests on the lake banks can be experienced in the best way during the boat ride. During the ride break, visit to the lookout Kik, a place where Josif Paničić discovered the new species of spruce that made him famous. Upon request, more breaks will be made so that tourists can swim in the lake.
Specialties of the local cuisine such as: homemade “gibanica” (a traditional pastry dish made with white cheese), kaymak (creamy dairy product, similar to clotted cream), dried meat, meat roasted under the bell, homemade plum brandy will be served at lunch.

Day Five – Mount Zlatibor

A circular tour that enables visitors to learn a lot about local history and explore interesting caves. Apart from the ethno open air museum, Sirogojno, which represents a unique exhibition of the old Serbian architecture, we will visit the house of the clairvoyant Tarabići where memories of the most famous Serbian prophets are kept.
Potpeć and Stopić caves are the most interesting speleological sites of this region. Stopić cave is known for its magnificent 40 meters high entrance and underground waterfalls, while Potpeć cave is rich in different cave ornaments.
On the way back to Mount Tara, visit to the Memorial Complex Kadinjača, a place known for the heroic resistance to the German offensive during the World War II.

Day Six – Perućac – Bajina Bašta

Visit to Bajina Bašta, an idyllic small town on the Drina River bank, at the foot of Mount Tara, and to the church of St. Elijah the Prophet.
Visit to the shortest river in Europe – the Vrelo River, only 365 meters long, and to its magnificent waterfalls over 30 meters high, where the Vrelo River flows into the Drina. Even though it is short, the Vrelo River is home to a large number of rainbow trout, grayling and huchen.
Rafting down the Drina River for13 kilometers from Perućac to Bajina Bašta. It is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, crystal clear, green, and it offers a unique atmosphere to rafters.
“Serbian Night”– gala dinner with specialties of Serbian national cuisine, with Serbian folk music and folklore.

-six nights half board at the Hotel Jezero in Perucac (traditional full serve meals) – Hotel Jezero *** is located at the foot of the national park Tara on the banks of Lake Perućac. Each room has a bathroom, satellite TV, direct dial telephone. There is the TV Lounge (Total TV) on the first floor. There is a restaurant with a capacity of 350 seats.
In the hotel vicinity there is the apartment complex Jezero**. There are the living room, kitchen, double bed bedroom, bathroom, TV, electric heater and balcony in the double bed apartmen. Bi-level four bed apartment has the living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, TV, electric heater and balcony on the lower level, while the upper level has two separate double bedrooms.
