09:30 – Departure in front of the hotel Omorika from Tara (Kaludjerske Bare)
10:45 – Arrival at Lake Zaovine, tour of the place where Josif Pančić found Omorika, free time for sightseeing
Tara was declared a national park on July 13th, 1981. It covers an area of about 24.991,82 hectares. Due to its favorable climate and remoteness, Tara is home to a rare relict and endemic tree species of the Balkan Peninsula, the Pančić Spruce, and many other natural monuments that can be called living fossils. The average height of Mount Tara is 1000-1200 meters above sea level. Its highest point is Kozji Rid (1591 m) and the lowest (291 m) is at Lake Perucac. The River Vrelo is the strongest karstic spring in the national park, and it flows into the Drina River after flowing 365 meters. Tara has a mountain climate with cool summers and cold winters with a lot of snow. It often rains in May. July and August are the driest months, and autumn is sunny and warmer than spring.
11:30 – Mitrovac – visit of the Tara National Park info center
Mitrovac, a part of Tara that cannot be missed during a visit to this mountain, is located at 1056 m above sea level on a flat plateau and is the center of children’s mountain tourism. The Tepih livada (Meadow Carpet), the special nature reserve Crveni potok, the Banjska stena viewpoint are just some of the reasons for the large number of visitors.
12:30 – Photo break at the Zelenika viewpoint, which offers a unique view of Lake Perućac and the Drina River
The Zelenika viewpoint is located next to the road that descends from Mitrovac to Perućac and offers one of the most beautiful views of the Drina River, the “Bajina Bašta” hydroelectric plant, Perućac lake and the Osati area in the Republic of Srpska. The viewpoint is called Zelenika (the green one), as people used to call the river Drina in ancient times. On the cascading plateau of this viewpoint, a wooden fence was built and six modern canopies with chairs, tables and deckchairs were installed, which offer visitors a special experience with a view of this part of Drina River flow.
13:00 – A walk along the entire course of the Vrelo River (also known as the One-year-long River)
Probably one of the shortest river in the world. It is 365 meters long and many say that the Vrelo River is the “One-year-long River”. It is rich in trout and after a short river flow and beautiful waterfalls it flows into the Drina River.
14:00 – A short break next to one of the most famous symbols of Bajina Bašta – the house on the rock
The town of Bajina Bašta is famous for the house perched on a rock in the middle of the River Drina which the Serbs also call Zelenika (zelena meaning green in Serbian). The house has been balancing on the rock since 1969 and the idea for it came from a group of young swimmers who wanted a more comfortable place to rest. According to folk tales, the reason for the rock being situated in the middle of the Drina is down to Serbia’s most famous epic medieval hero, Marko Kraljević. Wanting to go to the other bank of the Drina without getting his famous horse’s hooves wet, he throw a huge rock right in the middle of the river so his horse Šarac could jump between the riverbanks, stepping only on the rock in the river. If you look closely, you can still see Šarac’s hoof prints on the rock!
14:45 – Visit of the rakija distillery with tasting of the finest brandies from this region
Rakia (plum brandy) is produced in a traditional way using the finest varieties of plums. Today, the experience and long tradition of brandy making has been coupled with new technologies in producing spirits to give a unique stamp to these products.
15:30 – Tour of the medieval Rača monastery, an endowment of King Dragutin from the 13th century
Rača monastery is situated on the banks of the small river Rača, in the vicinity of Bajina Bašta. This medieval monastery was founded by the Serbian king, Dragutin Nemanjić. During the Ottoman period, the monastery was one of the most important cultural centres for Serbian people. Rača monastery was renowned for secretly copying Serbian literature in order to maintain cultural legacy. During World War II Rača monastery kept Miroslav’s Gospel, the largest and the most important 12th century document of Serbian literature. It was saved from being burnt by being hidden under the stone plates of the monastery’s altar.
